How to survive art + design school

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

Here's the deal—if you want to follow your passion, and make a living out of it, it's hard as heck but it IS POSSIBLE! I was thissss 👌 close to giving up but there were a few key components that helped me succeed + it paid off. Here's what you need to know:

credits to @abaderphoto for these grad pics!

1) The hustle. If you do not have a solid work ethic, as in willpower to pull through all nighters to get your work done for deadlines, the chance to prevail subsides. In the academic or professional world. (Can I get an amen for coffee 🙌) You need to have a grind - or - die mindset!

2) Confidence. You might run into some toxic students and snooty professors, which can appear in the workforce too. You know– the ones who find a way to critique the crap out of anything you do (which is inevitable) but to be torn down without receiving constructive guidance to better your craft as an artist/designer (is messed up... don't be that guy either!).

If I could go back in time— I'd stand up for myself rather than nod my head and let their verbal diarrhea go in one ear and out the other, because my passiveness was not bettering themselves as critics either. Without causing a scene I numbed myself to their destructive criticism, which in turn helped build my grit that I have today. But that leads me to...

3) Raise your voice. Your opinion matters!!! If you feel like you have been wronged, speak up because you can literally save your GPA from an unnecessary loss if you defend your work.

4) Get on that networking grind. Art + Design school will only be worthwhile if you stay on the grind! Get outside, make an effort to meet new creatives, DELETE YOUR NETFLIX ACCOUNT and jump on any challenges that come your way. Once you get your portfolio running and gain satisfied clients, it gets easier finding opportunities when employers see all the creative challenges you've taken on.

If I scared you --- good. Art + Design school is a risk to take, so follow my tips and you'll be just fine 😉
